Change a life – through the positive power of mentoring

Mentoring is simply about having fun and forming a friendship. It can be a simple as walking the dog or baking a batch of cookies. Time spent each week with a young person will help them develop their self-esteem, learn life skills and have fun! Interested in volunteering in our one-to-one mentoring programs?s6_img3

We know mentoring works.

For a young person from a disadvantaged background, a positive mentor can change their life.

All our research says they will be less likely to use drugs or alcohol, or find themselves in trouble with the police.
They will be more likely to go to school and develop good relationships with their family and friends.

We should know because at TRY we have been mentoring young people in Melbourne for more than 130 years. Just as prevention is much more effective than a cure, mentoring a young person is a proven early intervention that will help them create a positive life trajectory.

a week and you can change lives.

Mentoring isn’t hard. You don’t need any special skills.
In fact, if you can be a friend you can be a great mentor.
You won’t be thrown in at the deep end-we will give you the training and support you need.

And you may find it will change your life as well.

At TRY we currently run two kinds of mentoring programs across the Melbourne metropolitan area;

In the One-to-One Program, mentors and mentees have contact 3-4 times a month, usually for an hour or two once a week, and there is a minimum twelve month commitment.

We will assess you for your suitablility and then give you all the training and support you will need.

Our MiTH (Mentoring in The Hood) is a group program where young people and mentors come together in an activity for one hour a week. MiTH usually runs for a year, within a school or in a community space.

Just some of the activities include basketball, dancing, and fitness
training: what each group does depends on the interests of the young people and the skills that our volunteer mentors bring.

We give you all the training you will need. And you’ll be placed in a team who will also give you support every step of the way.

Mentoring in our MiTH programs gives you the opportunity to practice and develop your social skills, since you are meeting regularly with a group of people with common interests. By giving back to the community together, you make a connection through a shared experience which is ultimately making a difference.

You don’t need any special skills. In fact you will pick up skills that can help you in more ways than one. It will help your confidence, self esteem and physical fitness.

Once you have momentum, you will find it easier to branch out and make more friends and contacts.

Every $1 we raise will help us place an at-risk young person in a program for a year

Over the next 12 months we will be extending our Mentoring in the Hood programs across Melbourne. Every $1 we raise helps us provide the infrastructure and support for every Mentee/Mentor relationship. Every $80 will help them join a MiTH club. Every $200 will help us match them with a mentor in a group setting. Every $1200 covers the cost of Volunteer Assessment, training and ongoing support for 12 months.
